Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization
October 2024
The new pedestrian bridge has been fabricated and delivered to the Roy G. Guerrero Park Channel Stabilization site. This marks a major milestone in the efforts to replace the original bridge that was washed away by floodwaters in 2015.
Concrete drop structure construction.
Completed Tasks
- The pedestrian bridge has been delivered to the project site.
- The concrete drop structures are 50 percent complete.
Ongoing Tasks
- Construction of the concrete drop structures has switched to the west side.
- Concrete foundation for the pedestrian bridge is set to be poured in late November.
- The pedestrian bridge will be installed after the 44-foot concrete foundation is poured.
- Construction remains within the project's budget with substantial completion estimated by early 2025.
Background
Ongoing and severe erosion has been occurring along an artificial drainage channel, known as Country Club West, in Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. The erosion undermined the pedestrian bridge that used to be in the park, currently threatens the ball fields, trails, and parkland, and has made the channel too unstable to support a new bridge.
Areas near the Colorado River are especially vulnerable to erosion. Years of complex engineering analysis and design were needed to find a solution to the erosion threat in the park. The three concrete drop structures being built in the channel will stabilize erosion by acting as steps that steadily guide water into the river. The new pedestrian bridge will be installed atop one of the drop structures, supported by a 44-foot-deep foundation. This project is the Watershed Protection Department’s largest-ever erosion project.
