HIGHLIGHTS
At Tuesday's City Council meeting, a Public Hearing was held for increasing waste collection rates. Nine residents shared their thoughts and concerns regarding a proposed increase in waste collection rates. The adjustment includes changing the existing Solid Waste Collection fee to a Vehicle Impact Fee, which will help fund road repairs for roads that have experienced significant wear and tear from garbage trucks. This marks the first renegotiation of the Republic Services agreement in 25 years. A consultant from R3 presented a comparison showing that Pinole’s waste collection rates fall within the mid-range when compared to nearby cities. Residents were notified by mail and had the opportunity to submit protest forms. Councilmember Maureen Toms emphasized that “Measure I was not a 100% fix-all for road improvements... This is not replacing Measure I. We have a huge liability in our road system.” City Attorney Eric Casher clarified that the new fee would apply only to residents who use Republic Services. Following discussion, the City Council voted 4-1 to adopt the resolution approving the rate increase. View the Solid Waste Franchise Fee Study and Prop 218 FAQs.

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!
June is Pride Month - a time to honor the LGBTQ+ community's history, celebrate its achievements, and advocate for continued progress toward equality. The origins of Pride Month trace back to the Stonewall Uprising in June 1969, a pivotal event where LGBTQ+ individuals stood against police harassment in New York City. This act of resistance ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, leading to the first Pride marches in June 1970 and the annual global celebrations we see today.
The City of Pinole recognizes the significance of this month, and officially proclaimed June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month at the June 3, 2025 Council meeting. This proclamation reaffirms the city's commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful community for all residents. As part of this commitment, the city is flying the Progress Pride Flag at City Hall throughout June, symbolizing solidarity and support for LGBTQ+ individuals.
The City of Pinole invites everyone to the Pinole Pride and Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 8, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Fernandez Park (595 Tennent Ave.). This family-friendly event will feature art, vendors, food, and drinks, celebrating the themes of unity, freedom, equality, history, and pride.
Pride Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and the importance of standing together in support of diversity and inclusion. Join us in celebrating the vibrant spirit of the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirming our shared commitment to a more inclusive Pinole.

DOZENS GATHER TO CELEBRATE FISH MIGRATION DAY AT THE PINOLE FISH PASSAGE
The Contra Costa Resource and Conservation District (CCRCD) led a delightful event this past Saturday at the Pinole Fish Passage, located behind the bowling alley on Pinole Valley Road. Families enjoyed guided tours into the creek, educational booths (Our Water Our World, Friends of the Pinole Creek Watershed, National Park Service and more) and inspiring talks from local leaders, including County Supervisor John Gioia and Pinole City Councilmembers Norma Martinez-Rubin and Devin T. Murphy. Visitors of all ages explored the impressive fish ladder built in 2016, which plays a vital role in helping threatened steelhead travel upstream to spawn. This event honored the collaborative efforts behind the Fish Passage Project, led by partners like the Contra Costa County Resource Conservation District and EBMUD, which successfully restored connectivity between the Bay and critical upstream habitats.
