The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invited the public to learn about and provide input on its I-495 Southside Express Lanes Study (495 Southside Study) by holding virtual and in-person public information meetings in May. The 495 Southside Study, which began in January 2022, is being conducted by VDOT to assess a potential extension of the Express Lanes system on I-95/I-495 (the Capital Beltway) for 11 miles from the Springfield interchange (I-95/I-395/I-495) to MD 210 in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The goals and objectives of this study are to evaluate transportation improvements that extend and provide continuity of the Express Lanes system on I-495, provide additional travel choices, reduce congestion, improve travel reliability, improve safety, and provide consistency with local and regional plans.
VDOT held a virtual meeting option on May 18, as well as three in-person meeting options on May 19, May 23, and May 25. Each of the four meetings provided the same study information, including a formal presentation, question and answer session, and opportunities to provide input and comments on the study. The in-person meetings also included an open house period allowing attendees the chance to view exhibit boards and interact with staff individually to learn about the study.
