Project Design

The project will:

• Construct a new bridge on new alignment to the east of the current bridge
• Provide two 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot shoulders on the new bridge
• Provide improved truck access at the N.C. 48 and Roanoke Avenue Extension intersection south of the new bridge which will improve traffic operations and connections to existing sidewalks
• Construct new sidewalks along the east side of N.C. 48 from Roanoke Avenue Extension to Vepco Street and along the north side of Vepco Street east of N.C. 48 connecting to the existing sidewalk
• Close the Gaston Boating Access Area during construction of the new bridge and demolition of the old bridge and reopen once construction is complete

Project Update

Due to safety concerns, the Gaston Boating Access Area located at the north end of the bridge will be closed up to 24 months during construction of the new bridge and demolition of the old bridge. No permanent impacts are anticipated to the access road, boat ramp, or parking spaces and future recreational activities will not be impacted. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has jurisdiction over the Gaston Boating Access Area and agrees that the proposed project will have minimal impacts to this public recreational area and is therefore considered a "de minimis' impact under a federal statute. 

A de minimis impact is an impact that would not adversely affect the activities, features, or attributes qualifying a park, recreation area, or refuge for protection under Section 4(f). In order for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to consider finalizing a de minimis impact determination, an opportunity for public review and comment must be provided.
