U.S. 460/State Route 610 Intersection Improvement Project (Tazewell County)
U.S. 460/State Route 610 Intersection Improvement Project (Tazewell County)
Benefits
A project to improve safety at the intersection of U.S. 460 and State Route 610 in the Claypool Hill area of Tazewell County is currently being designed. The project includes raising the eastbound elevation of U.S. 460 to remove the grade difference with the westbound direction; this will allow for the northbound approach to be brought into the existing traffic signal. Additionally, a new traffic signal pole will be installed and the acceleration lane for the northbound right turn will be removed.
The project is financed using funds through VDOT's SMART SCALE Program, which includes an application and scoring process to evaluate projects statewide based on key factors such as improving safety and contributing to economic development.
U.S. Route 460 carries approximately 12,300 vehicles per day in this area.
Following the public meeting, the project design will be finalized. The project is anticipated to move to the right of way phase for any needed easements and/or utility relocations in July2024. Construction is anticipated to begin March 2026.
During construction, motorists can expect flaggers directing traffic in the work zone.
