A Street Pavement Preservation and Signal Upgrades: Northern Lights Blvd to 40th
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) and design consultant, Lounsbury and Associates, have nearly completed the Design Study Report and preliminary plans, specifications, and estimates for the A Street: Northern Lights Blvd. to 40th Ave. Pavement Preservation and HSIP: A Street Midtown Couplet Overhead Signal Indication Upgrades projects. The goal of these projects is to extend the roadway’s service life, improve ADA accessibility, and improve safety at the intersections of A Street with Northern Lights Boulevard and Benson Boulevard.
The project will include:
- Pavement replacement on A Street from 40th Ave to Northern Lights Blvd
- Rehabilitating portions of adjacent pedestrian and bicycle ways
- Upgrading curb ramps to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
- Replacing or improving signage, striping, and lighting as required
- Improving the storm drain system
- Traffic signal upgrades at A St and Northern Lights Blvd and A St and Benson Blvd
Highway Safety Improvement Program
The traffic signals at the intersections of A Street and Benson Boulevard and A Street and Northern Lights Boulevard were constructed in 1986 and do not meet current Alaska Traffic Manual standards. This project will address the safety issues at these intersections by increasing signal visibility and clarifying lane assignments with additional signal heads, replacing lighting, and providing updated signage and striping.
Schedule
Preliminary engineering, environmental, and design efforts will conclude in early 2021.
The bid package is anticipated to be ready in the spring of 2021 with construction following during the summer and fall. This is expected to be a one-construction season project with traffic impacts to A Street, Northern Lights Boulevard and Benson Boulevard.
