PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to improve an 8.5-mile stretch of N.C. 73 in Lincoln and Mecklenburg Counties.  Improvements along N.C. 73 begin at N.C. 16 in Lincoln County and extend to Northcross Drive (S.R. 2316) in Huntersville. The N.C. 73 project is included in the 2024–2033 NCDOT State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) as three projects:  R-5721A, R-5721B, and U-5765.  The projects are combined for environmental study purposes.

The limits for each STIP Project are described as follows:

  • R-5721A - N.C. 16 to Beatties Ford Road, Lincoln and Mecklenburg Counties

  • R-5721B - Beatties Ford Road to West Catawba Avenue, Mecklenburg County

  • U-5765 - West Catawba Avenue to Northcross Drive, Mecklenburg County

In addition, the Town of Huntersville sought and received a Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) grant that includes cost-sharing to develop a pedestrian bridge over N.C. 73 just west of Northcross Drive.  The bridge is being designed in partnership with NCDOT (Project No. BL-0119) and will connect to the Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation McDowell Creek Greenway.
