Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to install a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 98 and Moores Pond Road at the Wake/Franklin County line. As part of the project, a 4-foot paved shoulder will be constructed on N.C. 98 and a 2-Foot paved shoulder will be constructed on Moores Pond Road, within the project limits.
Project History
In May 2019, a Safety Project Request Report was completed for the intersection of N.C. 98 and Moores Pond Road in Wake County. For the five-year period between November 1, 2013 and October 31, 2018, a total of 42 crashes occurred at the intersection. 35 of the crashes resulted in injuries. A total of 77 people were injured in these crashes. A majority of crashes occurred during the study period (64.2%) were angle-type crashes. 16 people were injured in those type of crashes. The total crash rate for this intersection for the study period was 230.01 crashes per 100 million vehicles entering the intersection.

Information about Roundabouts
The N.C. Department of Transportation builds roundabouts to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical of traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals. A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal. In addition, the modern roundabout is much smaller than older traffic circles and requires vehicles to travel at lower speeds (15-20 mph), making them safer than traffic circles. Additionally, the slower speeds make it easier for a driver to find a gap of traffic inside the roundabout before safely entering it.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
