The Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 proposes safety improvements at the intersections of U.S. 62 with Bedford Road and U.S. 62 with Broadway Avenue in Masury, Ohio, near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border. U.S. 62 is a four-lane divided highway, with a speed limit of 55 miles per hour (MPH) through the project area. Bedford Road and Broadway Avenue are two-lane local roads with 35 MPH speed limits that provide the surrounding residential areas access to U.S 62 at unsignalized intersections.

TRU-62-7.47 Project Area

Following a fatal accident at the U.S. 62 and Bedford Road intersection in 2018, ODOT initiated a Safety Study for the project area. The Safety Study, completed in February 2020, identified crash trends, developed and examined potential countermeasures, and evaluated those countermeasures using Highway Safety Manual methodology and cost-benefit analyses. A copy of the Safety Study is included in the Documents Section in the sidebar. See the Project Purpose tab for a summary of the information from the Safety Study.

The various alternatives examined in the Safety Study were presented to a group of project stakeholders in November of 2019 to determine which alternatives best meet the needs of the project while minimizing potential impacts. Project stakeholders include Trumbull County, Brookfield Township Trustees, the Easgate Regional Council of Governments, and the Brookfield Township Fire and Police Departments. The Project Management Team, with input from the project stakeholders, have recommended an alternative for safety improvements at each intersection. See the Alternatives Considered tab for additional information on all the alternatives that were evaluated.

ODOT-District 4 is currently soliciting pubic input on the recommended alternatives for the proposed safety improvements at both the Bedford Road and Broadway Avenue intersections. The public comment period extends to July 23, 2021. ODOT will evaulate public input during the selection of the Preferred Alternative for each intersection improvement. Detailed engineering design will be completed in Summer 2022. Construction is anticipated to start in Spring 2023 and end in Winter 2023. The proposed project schedule is shown in the sidebar on this webpage.
