Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to make improvements at the intersection of Old Stage Road and Rock Service Station Road.  The proposed project would also widen Old Stage Road from Rock Service Station Road to Rolling Meadows Drive in Wake County. The purpose of the project is to reduce congestion in the study area and improve mobility at the intersection of Old Stage Road and Rock Service Station Road.

Following the public meeting, held on November 17, 2022, designs were refined and the following modifications were made.

Old Stage Road and Rock Service Station Road

Following the public meeting and signing of the environmental document (Categorical Exclusion, CE) several design changes have been made to minimize human impacts to the properties adjacent to the roadway.  The graphics below show a comparison of the original proposal (2022) and the updated proposal (2024).

  • The multi-use path (MUP) and sidewalk have been removed from the plan

    • Berms needed for these items were reduced from 15 feet to 4 feet throughout the project 

  • Grassed medians were converted to concrete medians 

  • In various locations, the utility easements were minimized to reduce impacts

Intersection of Rolling Meadows Drive and Old Stage Road

  • Rolling Meadow Drive intersection moved slightly north to avoid the septic field/relocation of the house on the southwest corner

    • The intersection realignment will be completed as part of this project.  

  • No impacts are anticipated to the stream that crosses Rolling Meadow Drive 

    • This stream is permitted for impacts under the N.C. 540 project

  • The northbound left turn lane from Old Stage Road to Rolling Meadow Drive was extended

Intersection of Old Stage Road and Banks Road

  • A signal was added to control southbound traffic on Old Stage Road while northbound traffic makes a left turn onto Banks Road​​​
