Olde Forge Park and Ride and Route 17 Business Improvements Stafford County

Olde Forge Park and Ride and Route 17 Business Improvements Stafford County

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites public comment from July 3, 2024 - August 16, 2024, on two proposed projects that would modify the intersection of Route 17 Business and Olde Forge Drive to improve traffic operations and provide ridesharing opportunities near exit 133 of Interstate 95 in Stafford County.

Project Overview

One project will modify the intersection of Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) at Route 1580 (Olde Forge Drive) and Route 698 (RV Parkway).

  • Route 17 Business would be widened to include a dedicated southbound right turn lane to Olde Forge Drive
  • RV Parkway would be realigned to intersect with Olde Forge Drive at Route 17 Business
  • New traffic signal equipment would be installed at the new four-way intersection, including pedestrian crossings
  • Existing sidewalk will be upgraded, and a 5-foot-wide sidewalk would be built along Route 17 Business from Short Street to Olde Forge Drive and would continue for approximately 600 feet east of Olde Forge Drive

A second project would build a new Park and Ride commuter lot along Olde Forge Drive near the intersection with Route 17 Business. The proposed lot would include parking for approximately 500 vehicles with lighting, a bicycle rack, a dedicated area for transit arrivals and departures with a passenger shelter, and a pickup and dropoff lane for carpools and vanpools.

The Route 17 improvement project at Olde Forge Drive and RV Parkway is estimated to cost $11.5 million, funded through Virginia's SMART SCALE program.

The new Park and Ride commuter lot is estimated to cost $24.1 million, funded through the Interstate Operations and Enhancement Program funds.

These projects were recommended to be funded as a result of the I-95 Corridor Improvement Plan in 2021
