Glenn Highway Rehabilitation: Airport Heights to Parks Interchange
Glenn Highway Rehabilitation: Airport Heights to Parks Interchange
This project will rehabilitate the Glenn Highway from Airport Heights Drive to the Parks Highway Interchange. The purpose of the project is to extend the life of the pavement and provide safety and capacity improvements on entrance ramps that are found to be functionally deficient upon completion of traffic studies. Entrance ramps can cause congestion when traffic entering from the ramp doesn't have time to reach highway speeds and find appropriate gaps for merging. The entrance ramp geometry and lengths are being analyzed to determine locations where changes could improve safety and decrease congestion.
Improvements may include:
- Resurfacing
- Repairing the pavement structural section
- Repairing or replacing culverts and other drainage improvements
- Replacing damaged roadway signs, delineators, and lighting
- Extending, repairing, or replacing guardrail
- Reconstructing entrance ramps where recommended and as funding allows. Ramp reconstruction may include roadway lighting, drainage, signs, and guardrail improvements.
This project is being developed by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration.
Status and Schedule
The project is just getting started! Crews have been out in the field collecting data and the traffic analysis of the ramps has begun. By fall of 2021 the Design Study Report (DSR) will be completed and we will know the extent of the improvements and then development of detailed plans can begin. The project may be broken into phases to match available funding with the first phase anticipated to be to construction in 2024.
