Piedmont Avenue Bridge Project PEL Study

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and local and state agencies, is conducting a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study for the Piedmont Avenue Bridge Project. The Piedmont Avenue Bridge begins in Bristol, VA and carries Piedmont Avenue (U.S. Route 11) over Beaver Creek through the downtown area and continues into Bristol, TN. The PEL Study will identify existing conditions, anticipated design constraints, and develop and screen a reasonable range of alternatives and recommended preferred alternative that will inform the environmental review process and project delivery.

VDOT invites the public to participate in the Public Information Meeting and review supporting documents. Meeting materials will be available for review, and members of VDOT will be available to answer questions.

The purpose of the Project is to improve the Piedmont Avenue Bridge, spanning south of Scott Street to State Street over Beaver Creek, by establishing an extended bridge service life and enhancing its overall condition.

The Project would address the following need:

• Establish an extended bridge service life to improve the aging conditions of the bridge, including areas of failing concrete with exposed reinforcement of the beams, deck, and substructure, and undermined footing at abutments and piers

• Eliminate load restrictions

• Maintain hydraulic capacity

• Provide a 75-year service life after construction
