Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Franklin St., Lee St., and Madison St. (U.S. 701 Business) in Whiteville.  Roundabouts improve safety and traffic flow. NCDOT was awarded a federal grant through the Carbon Reduction Program to help fund this project, which will eliminate the traffic signal at this location and result in less idling and reduced carbon emissions.

 

 

 

Project Highlights

The roundabout will consist of: 

  • one 18-foot circulatory travel lane
  • a 14-foot concrete apron to accommodate tractor-trailers, buses and other large vehicles
  • 12-foot approach lanes with concrete traffic islands
  • a grass median in the center

 

Project History

In January of 2021 the city of Whiteville adopted a Downtown Development Plan which recommended a roundabout at this location.  In 2023 this project was approved and funded under the Carbon Reduction Program.  Right of Way acquisition is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2025 and Construction will begin in winter of 2026.
