We desperately need a safe crosswalk at Westchase and Blue Ridge where the #27 and #100 bus stops are. Please consider what it's going to be like for kids to cross the wade ave ramps.
Please incorporate extensive shade along the sidewalks. Until you've walked from the NCMA to the fairgrounds in the summer you won't realize how little shade there is today.
The idea of a bike bridge, or anything specific that of bicyclists is usually fine, however, instead of a big red, gleaming, bridge simply improve/extend the non-bridge bike paths already available; better still, construct subway-style bike paths/trails. Frankly, Raleigh is not small enough to be "bike-friendly", there are too many cars, too many people and too much traffic for bicyclist to travel- safely- as it is, adding a toll to build this new bridge (for a small number of people to use) will only make biking more difficult for the very people this "improvement" is proposed to help.
People crossing BRR to or from the bike/ped bridge must cross 2 crosswalks both in immediate proximity to an off-ramp and on-ramp. A multi use path should be installed on the west side of BRR from Reedy Creek down to the bike/ped bridge to give better protections to users.
Perhaps, but traffic needs to be slowed. Cyclists and pedestrians should be on separate paths. Textured pavement around crosswalks that are clearly marked with flashing lights and blaring horns to make drivers pay attention at turns. Do not underestimate the distractedness and sheer aggressiveness of the drivers in the bigger better Raleigh.
The on and off ramps from Wade Ave will still be dangerious to bikers. Is it possible to continue the sidewalk on the west side of Blue Ridge from Reedy Creek all the way to Trinity Rd? Then you wouldnt need to cross the street at the one ramps. No turn on red signs, when the crosswalk button is hit, would help make this crossing point at Wade Ave off/on ramps a bit safer.
It is an improvement, but does not seem fully sufficient because there seems to be a lot of opportunity for conflict with fast-moving vehicles and bikes have to cross the road b/c this is a single-loaded path.
Again, we desperately need a safe crosswalk at Westchase and Blue Ridge where the #27 and #100 bus stops are. It would be a failure not to provide a reasonable way to cross the street at that critical junction.
It's a marginal improvement, but Blue Ridge Rd is a hostile environment for anyone not in a personal automobile. This project can't fix that people trying to catch the bus or go from their stop to their destination have to cross 5-6 lanes of fast moving, multi-ton vehicles.
On the south side of Wade Ave, there are no sidewalk/multi use facilities or crosswalks to get people safely across BRR. This needs addressed. There is an intersection in front of the Ramada that could be explored.
Current conceptual design is too "low slung", blends into the bridge visually, and is below grade of Blue Ridge Road. A true gateway into Raleigh should be Bolder and more visually striking.
I think the bridge looks fairly nice as depicted. I like the bright color and the design somewhat evokes a railroad track for me. It is difficult to tell how far from the road the bridge will be and what its elevation will be. In general, I would not want to be close to a road, especially if the road was higher and I felt like cars were zooming by my head.
Also, is there an effort to create an overall brand/look for Raleigh? I think a uniform approach would have more impact than a series of one-off designs.
Firstly, if RDU is not "focal" enough then I suspect people coming into Raleigh will not stay long. Secondly, the goal of city planners must not be to create snapshots of Raleigh, or a glimpse of what some may find and others will not, but rather attempt to retain Good talent and residents that will stay and contribute to the local economy. This is done by creating interactive projects (i.e. city events more accessible to surrounding counties and cities by widening public transportation, or collaborative duo-city/multi-city projects) that residents will discuss when leaving town, or taking trips, that will persuade others to come join us here in the Capital!

The multi-use bridge over Wade is an excellent idea, but the crossing of the offramps presents a extreme safety risk. Drivers looking to turn right on red at the top of the ramp will only look left for oncoming car traffic, and will never check to their right for peds and bikes.
This project will look nice, I have no doubt. But a bike/ped project that puts cyclists and pedestrians in conflict with fast-moving, multi-ton vehicles is simple placation. I commend the effort to throw pedestrians and cyclists a bone, but this project asks nothing of motorists. They will still get to blast down this road at 50-60 mph and the sanctity of auto-centric level of service will be protected.
