Project Highlights

The purpose of the proposed project is to provide an alternative truck route from the existing U.S. 1 currently routed through downtown Rockingham.

The project proposes improvements along a half mile section of Greene Street including

  • A roundabout at the existing intersection of U.S. 1 and Greene Street

  • Widening and upgrading Greene Street by adding curb and gutter and sidewalks throughout the entire corridor

From U.S. 220 to North Lee Street, the upgrades will consist of a four-lane undivided facility. From North Lee Street to U.S. 1, the upgrades will consist of a two-lane undivided facility.

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project,

it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
