Parks Highway Reconstruction Phase 3: Pittman to Big Lake
Parks Highway Reconstruction Phase 3: Pittman to Big Lake
The Parks Highway Milepost (MP) 44-52 project between Wasilla and Big Lake is in the final phase of construction. In 2006, this section of the Parks Highway became the second designated safety corridor in Alaska, a designation that can be removed with each phase of construction. Phases 1 (Wasilla to Church Road) and 2 (Church Road to Pittman Road) are complete. The final phase between MP 48.8 (near Pittman) and MP 52.3 (just beyond Big Lake Road) began this fall. Construction is expected to be substantially complete by 2022.
The design incorporates techniques that control access to the highway which will increase the capacity, manage congestion and reduce crashes. The key access management features along the Parks include:
- Divided highway with grassy median
- Limit spacing of at-grade intersections to every 1/2 mile
- Minimize number of median openings
- Design for U-turns at median openings
- Improve and extend frontage roads where feasible
- Add parallel roads when frontage roads are not feasible
- Driveway consolidation
To see how your travel routes will change with Phase 3 construction, look at the overview drawings on the documents page.
