W 32nd & E 33rd Avenue Upgrades

The Municipality of Anchorage is designing upgrades to a roadway corridor across Midtown Anchorage extending from Spenard Road to the Old Seward Highway. The corridor includes improvements to W. 30^th Avenue, North Star Street, W. 32nd Avenue, Calais Drive, E. 33rd Avenue, Fairbanks Street and W. 34^th Avenue (project map below). The purpose of the project is construct a route that will enhance safety and accessibility for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists by implementing Complete Streets design standards as recommended by the Anchorage Vision Zero Steering Committee.

Phase 1 of the project includes reconstructing W. 30^th Avenue from Spenard Road to Arctic Boulevard, North Star Street from W. 30^th Avenue to W. 32^nd Avenue, construction of a new pathway from North Star Street to Arctic Boulevard and interim bike lane signage and striping on W. 32^nd Avenue between Arctic Boulevard and C Street. The improvements between Spenard Road and Arctic Boulevard will include:

Roadway structural section with pavement
Attached 5-foot wide sidewalks on W. 30^th Avenue
4-foot wide bike lanes on W. 30^th Avenue from Spenard Road to North Star Street
8-foot wide attached pathway on North Star Street
Barrier curb and gutter installation on the reconstructed roadways
Drainage improvements
Roadway lighting
10-foot pathway from North Star Street to Arctic Boulevard with pedestrian lighting
Pedestrian refuge island in Arctic Boulevard at W. 32^nd Avenue
Installation of curb ramps that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Schedule

Phase 1 design will be completed this winter and construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2021. Phase 2-4 65% design has been completed. Additional funds for final design and construction of the remaining phases has yet to be secured.
