With federal funding provided through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Commonwealth of Virginia is investing a projected $100 million over the next five years to install public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Virginia through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program. To meet the federal requirements of the NEVI Program, the initial phase of public charging stations will be located within one mile of Virginia's federally-designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs; I-64, I-66, I-77, I-81, I-85, I-95, I-295, I-495, and US-17, US-23, US-29, and portions of US-460) to provide convenient and accessible charging and support the growing EV market in Virginia. The map below shows existing Virginia AFCs.
In order to access this federal funding, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was required to develop a deployment plan by August 1, 2022, and update the plan annually. The most recent Virginia Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan was approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on October 26, 2023. To meet NEVI program requirements, the plan is focused on filling gaps between existing charging stations along Virginia's existing AFCs.
