The project logo Big Idea #6 Reconnect to Water

The Catawba River is Mecklenburg County’s largest water body and a critical source of drinking water. Yet, it could do much more for recreation, environmental resources, economic development and tourism. MeckPlaybook imagines the Catawba as a growing destination for greenway trails, river access, and habitat restoration in beautiful, natural settings.
Blueways and collaboration with organizations like the Mecklenburg Audubon Society or public utilities can increase engagement with the often unseen and underutilized river. Strategic acquisitions and improvement can create new experiences for residents.
