Route 360 Road Diet, Northumberland County
Route 360 Road Diet, Northumberland County
Project Overview
To reduce crashes and injuries on Route 360, provide traffic calming, and improve mobility for pedestrians, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has proposed installing a "road diet" on two sections of Route 360 (Richmond Road/Northumberland Highway) in the Callao and Lottsburg area of Northumberland County.
The new traffic pattern would be installed during fiscal year 2025, in coordination with funded work to resurface the road and add new lane markings.
Lane markings on Route 360 would be installed to have one lane for through travel in each direction, and a two-way left turn lane in the center.
The segments are located:
- From west of the Route 360/Route 202 intersection in Callao to the signal at the Route 360/Route 202 intersection
- From the intersection of Route 624 (Lewisetta Road) to the divided roadway east of Route 623 (Kingston Road) in Lottsburg
Road diets have a demonstrated ability to reduce crashes, especially rear-end, left turn and angle crashes.
This pattern also creates opportunities to establish dedicated left turn lanes and to use paved shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Design Public Hearing
A design public hearing will be held:
Thursday, August 1, 2024
5-7 p.m.
Callao Volunteer Fire Department
314 Northumberland Highway
Callao, VA 22435
VDOT representatives will make a brief presentation at 5 p.m. and will be present to answer questions after the presentation is complete. The remainder of the public hearing will be held in an open house format.
Project Benefits
- Fewer anticipated crashes, injuries, and fatalities. By reducing conflict points between through traffic and turning vehicles, VDOT's traffic study found implementing a road diet could result in a potential 35 percent reduction in the total number of crashes, and a potential 59 percent reduction in serious fatal and injury crashes.
- Additional shoulder space. Newly available roadway space can be used for other purposes, such as pedestrians and bicycles
