The road project from Kotzebue to the Cape Blossom Port will to bolster transportation efficiency and lower freight shipping costs within the Northwest Arctic Borough, primarily connecting Kotzebue to a proposed port at Cape Blossom. This port's design, initiated by the City of Kotzebue, will eliminate the need for expensive barge lighterage services, spurring regional economic growth in sectors like natural gas exploration, mining, and fish processing. The road construction project, being applied for with this grant, is also a strategic response to regional housing shortages, land scarcity, and coastal erosion threats, providing new housing land and better access to private land holdings and crucial recreational and subsistence areas, including Sadie Creek.
RURAL: This project's concluding phase is budgeted at approximately $53,501,977, with a federal request of $42,721,582 (80%). The state commits to the 20% match of $10,680,395.
