Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes improvement to the intersection of N.C. 5 and Morganton Road in Pinehurst. The project proposes to:

  • Add or extend turn lanes at N.C. 5 and Morganton Road intersection to improve traffic operations.
  • Relocate the striped golf course maintenance vehicles crossing and pedestrian crossing further east, away from the intersection.
  • Install Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon traffic control devices in both directions on Morganton Road.

The purpose of this project is to reduce projected congestion and improve safety for pedestrians and maintenance vehicles crossing Morganton Road at the Pinehurst Resort Golf Course Maintenance Center.

Multiple alternative concepts were considered. Turn lane improvements on N.C. 5 and Morganton Road with installation of a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon traffic control devices were determined to be the most feasible.

Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons

A pedestrian hybrid beacon is a device used to assist pedestrians in marked crosswalks and control traffic at locations without signal lights.

It is activated by a pedestrian pushing a button on the beacon pole. Pedestrian hybrid beacons are used when it is difficult for pedestrians to cross a roadway (gaps in traffic or the speed limit is over 35 mph).

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
