Increasing Public Safety and Improving Transportation Conditions on Rural Alaska Highways (Grant Overview)
Increasing Public Safety and Improving Transportation Conditions on Rural Alaska Highways (Grant Overview)
Application for the Advanced Transportation Technology and Innovation (ATTAIN) Grant Program
Total Project Cost: $6,231,851
Federal Request: $4,985,481
State Match: $1,246,370
The rural nature of Alaska's highway system means that road maintenance and public safety response times can be slower compared to urban areas. Innovative technologies like mobile Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) will help DOT&PF prioritize maintenance efforts and enhance the identification of hazardous conditions. This allows for more efficient deployment of resources to keep rural highways in good condition and passable during extreme weather events and increase emergency response. It will also allow for more accurate and timely reporting of existing road conditions for the public. Alaska's rural highway system presents unique challenges due to its vast geographical expanse, extreme weather conditions, and limited accessibility. Mobile RWIS would be invaluable in addressing these challenges.
The data collected by mobile RWIS units can support long-term transportation planning in Alaska. It helps DOT&PF make informed decisions regarding infrastructure improvements that are better suited to the state's unique climate challenges. This proactive approach can lead to more resilient and reliable rural highway systems.
Advanced Transportation Technology and Innovation (ATTAIN) Grant Program
