Preserving A Smaller and Sustainable Lake Accotink: What’s Next?

The Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study aims to better understand the conditions within Accotink Creek and Lake Accotink, while exploring the best methods for preserving a 20 to 40-acre lake at a depth of 4 to 8 feet.

The County is working with an independent design and engineering firm to conduct the Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study to evaluate potential smaller lake options.

The Preservation Feasibility Study will use results from the Sedimentation Rate Study and the Lake Accotink Dam Assessment. This work is currently underway and happening in coordination with different engineering firms, as well as the U.S. Geological Survey that Fairfax County is partnering with. Learn more about the studies by visiting our Background and Understanding the Studies pages.

Timeline and Next Steps

A timeline of the Smaller Lake Accotink's study timeline

Preserving a smaller version of Lake Accotink offers a promising path forward, but it requires thorough planning and community input. We will continue to balance community interest along with recreational and cultural values.

The Preservation Feasibility Study is anticipated to be completed by late 2026. However, field data collection will continue through the end of 2027, which may require updates to the feasibility study. We will share updates and milestones achieved in 2026 and in 2027. A timeline for the Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study is available on the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services website.
