Project Overview

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is designing and constructing Complete Streets improvements on several downtown corridors to create safer, more connected streets for everyone. These projects are based on recommendations from the Connect Downtown Action Plan, a collaborative effort shaped through extensive community engagement and developed in partnership with NDOT, WeGo Public Transit, the Nashville Downtown Partnership, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).

Many of the improvements identified in Connect Downtown are now being advanced through the voter-approved Choose How You Move (CHYM) program, which provides dedicated funding for transportation investments across Davidson County. These downtown projects represent an important step in implementing the community's long-term vision for a safer, more connected, and more efficient transportation network.

These improvements will help make more efficient use of existing street space – improving safety and mobility for everyone who lives, works, or plays in the heart of Music City. 

Complete Streets  

Complete Streets are designed to safely and comfortably accommodate everyone, regardless of how they travel, their age, or their ability. Depending on the corridor, improvements may include sidewalks, safer pedestrian crossings, protected mobility lanes, transit enhancements, traffic signal upgrades, and other features that improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity. 

Protected mobility lanes are one element of the Complete Streets improvements included in this project. Mobility lanes and complete streets make it easier and safer to walk, bike, scoot, or use mobility devices for short trips, especially in a busy downtown or during events. Instead of driving from place to place, some people may park once and then bike or scoot to nearby destinations. This helps reduce short car trips and frees up road space for people who need to travel longer distances or for deliveries.

Together, these improvements help deliver the goals identified in Connect Downtown and support CHYM's broader investment in a transportation system that gives people more choices for how they move around Nashville.
