The City of Kettering, Parks Recreation and Cultural Arts Department (PRCA) is seeking a matching grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources under their Recreational Trails Program. The project is the existing Pondview Park Accessible Nature Trails Rehabilitation.
The Park was originally constructed in 2003-2010 over several phases that culminated in an ADA accessible Park. The Park features six self-directed learning stations/pods; accessible trails; fishing pond; scenic overlook platform, and observation points for individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and strollers. A forest growth learning site, prairie restoration programs, butterfly garden, wetlands experience, sensory garden, interactive kiosks, resting spots throughout, and public off-site parking with accessible rest rooms are part of the outdoor learning experience.
To continue this offering to the public, the City of Kettering has identified elements of the park that have degraded due to use and some materials that have deteriorated over time having met their useful life. These conditions have rendered some of the trails unusable by the intended population with disabilities and the Park is in need of restoration to meet ADA standards once again. Some foot bridge decking and intersection notice decking will require updating to maintain ADA accessibility standards as well. These elements (not the pathways themselves) are planned for renovation in 2024 and do not impact the Grant Application. This project will restore trail pathways within accessible pathways along the trailhead.
