Project Overview
Planning and development are underway to widen approximately 6.5 miles of East John Street and Old Monroe Road – from Trade Street to Wesley Chapel Stouts Road – in the towns of Matthews, Stallings and Indian Trail.
Proposed work would improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays, and allow for more vehicles to travel in the area. Bicyclists and pedestrians also would have accommodations along the project corridor.
Work on project U-4714 has been divided into four sections:
Section AA: Trade Street to I-485
Section AB: I-485 John Street interchange rebuild
Section AC: Between I-485 and Morningside Meadow Lane in Stallings
Section B: Morningside Meadow Lane to Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road in Indian Trail
Under Section B, the N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to make improvements to Old Monroe Rd (S. R. 1009) from West of Morningside Meadow Ln to East of Wesley Chapel-Stouts Rd in the towns of Matthews and Indian Trail.
Since the 2017 public meeting, modifications have been proposed for the Old Monroe Road / Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road area. Roundabouts are being proposed in three locations as shown below. The locations of these roundabouts are at Mustang Drive (western roundabout), at Sun Valley Commons entrance (northern roundabout) and at Sun Valley High School (eastern roundabout). Additional Information about Roundabouts
The N.C. Department of Transportation builds roundabouts to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical of traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals. A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal. In addition, the modern roundabout is much smaller than older traffic circles and requires vehicles to travel at lower speeds (15-20 mph), making them safer than traffic circles. Additionally, the slower speeds make it easier for a driver to find a gap of traffic inside the roundabout before safely entering it.
