Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation Rail Division, in collaboration with the City of Greensboro, proposes to improve the existing railroad crossing over the NCRR/Norfolk Southern H Line at South English Street in Greensboro.

  • A bridge would be constructed over the current crossing.
  • The existing Holts Chapel Road at-grade crossing would be closed.
  • Holts Chapel Road would be rerouted to English Street for crossings using the new bridge.

South English Street would be upgraded including:

  • Two 11-foot lanes with a center turn lane
  • Curb and gutter
  • Five-foot sidewalks on the west side and ten-foot multi-use path on the east side
  • The Bridge includes five-foot five-inch sidewalk on west side and a ten-foot ten-inch multi-use path on the east side.

This design will be maintained on the bridge over the railroad. The new connection will provide access to the Food Lion parcel southeast of the existing South English Street at-grade crossing and access to existing Avalon Road.

The purpose of this project is to enhance mobility and improve safety.

Resources for Property Owners

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road

project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right

of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
