Ferry Tolling Implementation
Ferry Tolling Implementation
NCDOT and the Ferry Division are evaluating toll rates, payment and collection options, terminal needs, policies, customer support and other implementation details.
North Carolina Session Law 2026-41 directs the N.C. Department of Transportation to establish and begin collecting tolls across the state ferry system on all ferry routes by Jan. 1, 2027.
Toll revenue will support long-term vessel replacement. It should be noted that revenue collected cannot be used for day-to-day operations, staffing, fuel, maintenance or other operating expenses. Because several decisions remain under evaluation, more information will be forthcoming.
What is Changing:
| Tolls currently collected | Required Tolling to be introduced |
|---|---|
| Cedar Island-Ocracoke (vehicle) | Currituck-Knotts Island (vehicle) |
| Swan Quarter-Ocracoke (vehicle) | Bayview-Aurora (vehicle) |
| Southport-Fort Fisher (vehicle) | Hatteras-Ocracoke (vehicle) |
| Hatteras-Ocracoke (passenger) | Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach (vehicle) |
