Background

The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) corridor from south of Featherbed Lane to Guinea Road in Gloucester County. This study will focus on improving safety, preserving capacity (to keep traffic flowing smoothly), and enhancing bicycle and transit access. Currently, there are no existing bicycle facilities along the corridor. Bay Transit provides microtransit services throughout the study area. Route 17 is a Corridor of Statewide Significance (CoSS) serving local residents, regional commuters, vacationers, and is also an emergency evacuation route. The project recommendations that come from this study will be prioritized and considered for development into funding applications for VDOT's SMART SCALE program and other transportation funding programs.

Featherbed Lane and White Marsh Shopping Center concepts are being developed by an adjacent STARS study, which will conduct public outreach separately.

This Phase 2 survey is intended to obtain public input on the alternatives under consideration to address the issues that were identified by the study team. Your feedback will help your local leaders decide whether to pursue future funding opportunities. Thank you for your input.

Public Information Meeting

In addition to gathering feedback through this online survey, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in partnership with Gloucester County, is holding a public information meeting to share potential improvements proposed by this Project Pipeline study as well as another nearby study. The meeting will be held in an open-house format, and staff will be available to answer questions.
