Patapsco Regional Greenway: Stoney Run (Phase 3)
Since January, we have been working with the local community and area experts to come up with a design and route for the Patapsco Regional Greenway: Stoney Run Trail!
We have considered feedback from residents, organizations, and community leaders. This essential information helped us create a plan for the preferred trail location. Now, we want to hear your thoughts on trail amenities!
Check out the info below and then take our survey. Comments are welcome through Friday, December 20, 2024. We look forward to hearing from you!
About the Stoney Run Trail
The Stoney Run Trail is a planned 4-mile path for people who bike, walk, or roll. It stretches from Historic Elkridge to the BWI Trail.
Since January, we’ve been working with community leaders and area experts to develop a plan for where the Stoney Run Trail will go. We have also asked people what would make a great trail.
Based on that feedback and the research and work we’ve done, we have put together an initial plan. Check it out and let us know what you think by taking our survey.

This spring we found that 68% of those that provided comments, supported the Stream option. The selected trail is a combination of the Stream and Utility options. The chosen location seeks to address safety and preserve the natural environment and scenic quality, which we heard were priorities. Check out highlights below:
- Safety and separation from traffic - We understand the importance of safety and having the trail be separated from traffic. High-speed vehicles were a concern. We heard you, and the Stoney Run Trail will be designed to be safe, comfortable and accessible for a wide range of people. The preferred location reduces the amount of on-road trail segments, and moves the portion in Elkridge to Railroad Avenue, which has less vehicle traffic than Furnace Avenue.
- Scenic views - The trail adds scenic views of the Patapsco River and Stoney Run, winding through the forest.
- Connecting to Transit - We also heard that people want to make sure the trail connects to transit and other important places in the area. The trail will provide a connection to the BWI Trail, which connects to the BWI MARC station.
- Connecting to other trails - The Stoney Run Trail will also connect to other trails in the area and become part of the Patapsco Regional Greenway. This will allow regional bicycle and pedestrian connections.
