The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) plays a vital role in providing reliable and sustainable transportation services for Alaska’s communities and commerce. Faced with challenges such as an aging fleet, rising costs, and staff shortages, the AMHS is prioritizing modernization efforts, including the introduction of new vessels. A key initiative in this process is the High Efficiency Commuter Ferry project, which aims to explore hybrid electric propulsion systems for routes that are well-suited for this technology. This project will allow the AMHS and passengers to assess emerging technologies and their potential increased operational efficiency, while also enhancing transportation infrastructure for coastal communities that depend on affordable and reliable ferry services for economic stability.

Initiated in 2023, the project began with Alaska Department Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF)-AMHS and Southeast Conference (SEC) evaluating the feasibility of hybrid ferries, identifying Ketchikan-Metlakatla and Skagway-Haines as potential hybrid commuter routes. While the specific pilot route, vessel design, and level of service have yet to be determined, public participation is a key focus. Alaska DOT&PF, in collaboration with SEC and other stakeholders, is committed to engaging Alaskans in the planning and decision-making process. The project aims to bring significant benefits, including improved mobility access, energy independence, economic stability, safety and reliability and community health. Updates, public comment opportunities, and community engagement events will be made available to ensure transparency and public involvement throughout the project’s development.
