This Board hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is error in order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the County's zoning ordinance. The Board hears and decides appeals for variance from the requirements of the zoning ordinance when strict application of the ordinance would result in unnecessary hardship. The Board also makes decisions regarding the permitting of uses by special exception subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the County's Zoning Ordinance.Charleston County Board of Zoning Appeals meetings are scheduled at 4:00 pm (subject to change) on the first Monday of each month (unless a County holiday conflicts) and held on the second floor of the Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405.Visit our website: www.charlestoncounty.org\departments\zoning-planning

County Council

County Council makes policy decisions for Charleston County, as established in state law. Council's nine members serve four-year staggered terms and are elected from single member districts. County Council elects a Chair annually to act as its spokesperson and preside at its meetings. Councilmembers serve on a part-time basis and each member receives an annual salary of $20,738. The Council Chair receives an annual salary of $26,142 for the performance of extra duties. County Council generally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and holds committee meetings on the Thursday prior to the County Council meeting. County Council operates under the Rules of Council. In compliance with the S.C. Freedom of Information Act, all meetings are open to the public. Meeting agendas are posted in the lobby of the Lonnie Hamilton, III, Public Services Building, and sent to anyone who requests notice. To be added to County Council's notification list, please subscribe!County Council serves as a link between county government and the citizens, municipalities, and agencies located within its boundaries, and also represents the area's concerns and interests when dealing with other local, state, federal, or international governments. Council is responsible for approving an annual budget to fund county operations, including the determination of any necessary taxes or fees.Charleston County Government operates under the Council-Administrator form of government. County Council directly employs and supervises four employees of Charleston County Government: the Clerk of Council, the County Administrator, the County Attorney, and the Internal Auditor. The Clerk of Council is appointed to provide administrative support and maintain official records of County Council. The County Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the County. The County Attorney represents, advises, and advocates for Charleston County government, including County Council as well as the County’s various boards, commissions, elected officials, appointed officials, and employees acting in their governmental capacity. The Internal Auditor provides County Council with professional and independent evaluations of county activities. The Greenbelt Advisory Board Subcommittee is a 6-member committee of the Greenbelt Advisory Board (GAB). The Subcommittee is appointed by the GAB to review, evaluate, and make recommendations to the GAB regarding Greenbelt applications for funding.Meetings will be held in Council Chambers located on the 2nd floor of the Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building (4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston). Greenbelt Advisory Board (GAB)

The Greenbelt Advisory Board was established by Charleston County Council to make recommendations on sales tax expenditures for greenbelt projects. The initial role of the Board was to prepare and deliver recommendations and comments on the Comprehensive Greenbelt Plan, which was adopted by County Council on June 6, 2006. The Board will continue to garner public input while advocating for the implementation of the Greenbelt Plan. The Greenbelt Advisory Board consists of 14 members elected by Charleston County Council and the elected Councils of each of the three major municipalities in Charleston County (Charleston, Mount Pleasant and North Charleston).Meetings will be held in Council Chambers located on the 2nd floor of the Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building (4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston). The Historic Preservation Commission Engagement Portal is where the current cases, meeting agenda(s), and case packets for the Historic Preservation Commission are located.  Click the link to visit the page: https://engage.charlestoncounty.org/CCHPCPortalAbout the Historic Preservation Commission:The Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission consists of nine members appointed by County Council. The Commission has final decision-making authority on Certificates of Historic Appropriateness. In matters for which Commission is the authority, Commission's is the sole meeting required for resolution. The Historic Preservation Commission acts in a review and recommending capacity to County Council for Designations of Historic Property, and may also conduct first review and evaluation of all proposed nominations for the National Register of Historic Properties. For these matters, the Commission meeting and subsequent County Council meetings are necessary for Council's resolution.Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission meetings are scheduled at 2:00 pm on the third Wednesday of each month (unless a County holiday conflicts) and held on the second floor of the Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405.  The current meeting schedule is attached in the "Documents" section.Visit our website: www.charlestoncounty.org\departments\zoning-planning
