I-64/Denbigh Boulevard Interchange Projects
I-64/Denbigh Boulevard Interchange Projects
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in cooperation with the city of Newport News and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is studying a proposed interchange at I-64 and Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News, Virginia. This new interchange would serve as an additional access point along I-64 between Fort Eustis Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.
The goal of the projects is to improve regional mobility and safety, expand local network access, alleviate congestion, and support increased demand from a developed urban corridor.
VDOT recognizes this project location recently underwent construction for the replacement of the Denbigh Boulevard bridge over I-64. The replacement of the overpass bridge, which began in 2018, was deemed necessary due to structural deficiencies from excessive settling. The design of the new bridge was developed to accommodate the recent widening of I-64, additional rail, and also allows for the addition of this proposed interchange along I-64. As part of the proposed interchange plans, the newly constructed bridge will not be replaced, only modified to accommodate additional turn lanes for exit/entrance ramps to I-64.
During the ongoing preliminary engineering phase for the projects, VDOT is exploring maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans to minimize traffic impacts on Denbigh Boulevard as much as possible during construction. Based on the current schedules for both projects, construction activities on the first phase of the interchange improvements, which encompasses the I-64 west exit and entrance ramps, are estimated to begin in early 2026. A public hearing and additional opportunity for public feedback on the proposed plans for both projects are anticipated to occur in summer 2024, with details to be announced to the public once scheduled.
An Environmental Assessment is being prepared to study potential impacts on the human and natural environments surrounding the proposed interchange.
VDOT invites the public to provide feedback on the proposed projects and scope of issues to be addressed in the Environmental Assessment. Please share your input through the survey below.
