Project Highlights

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes replacing the bridge on Old Mountain Road over I-40 in Iredell County. A new structure will be built to the east of the existing bridge. The new bridge will include two 12-foot travel lanes and 6-foot paved shoulders on each side. A roundabout will be constructed on each side of the bridge at the on/off ramps to facilitate the movement of traffic.

Old Mountain Road will remain open during construction. There will be no detour of Old Mountain Road. However, there will be 2 short-term closures of the I-40 on-off ramps requiring detours. The east side ramps will be closed for 1 weekend to construct tie-ins to the new ramps. The westside ramps will close for 30-45 days for construction of part of the proposed roundabouts.

The detour will affect vehicles on eastbound I-40 wanting to access Old Mountain Road and vehicles on Old Mountain Road trying to access westbound I-40. This detour will use the Stamey Farm Road interchange located to the east of Old Mountain Road. Vehicles will access/exit I-40 at the Stamey Farm Road interchange, follow Stamey Farm Road south to Hickory Highway (US 70), then west to Old Mountain Road.

No relocations are anticipated with this project and right of way acquisition is anticipated to be minimal.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road

project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right

of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
