Leeland Rd. Widening and Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements
Leeland Rd. Widening and Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements
Two transportation projects are fully funded through the construction phase along Route 626 (Leeland Road) in Stafford County.
Both projects would be accomplished under a single construction contract, which would be advertised to bidders in fall 2029, with construction underway in late 2029-2031.
One project will widen Leeland Road to a three-lane section between Route 694 (Julian Drive) and Route 622 (Walnut Drive), with one travel lane in each direction, and a shared two-way left turn lane in the center of the road.
The second project will make several improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians:
- A 5-foot-wide sidewalk would be built along the east and west side of Leeland Road between Route 607 (Deacon Road) and Walnut Drive.
- A pedestrian crossing equipped with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon would be installed at the intersection of Walnut Drive, to assist in crossing Leeland Road.
- A 5-foot-wide sidewalk would continue along the west side of Leeland Road from Walnut Drive to Route 1950 (Portland Drive).
- Bicycle lanes would be extended along Leeland Road from Deacon Road to Portland Drive.
- Between Route 624 (Primmer House Road) and the entrance to the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) station, the existing sidewalk will be converted to a 10-foot-wide shared use path.
A pedestrian crossing was installed across Leeland Road at the Walnut Farms Parkway/Perth Drive intersection in 2024 as a separate initiative, along with a pedestrian crosswalk across Portland Drive.
Benefits
- Connects multiple neighborhoods and properties along Leeland Road.
- Links residential areas with the Virginia Railway Express station and Park and Ride lot.
- New pedestrian crossing at Walnut Drive.
