PROJECT OVERVIEW

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to improve the intersection of McKee Road (S.R. 3440) and Weddington Road (S.R. 3468) to address existing and future congestion. Proposed improvements include extending existing turn lanes and constructing new ones, improving safety by constructing a median and enhancing bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.

The McKee Road/Weddington Road intersection improvements will tie into the interchange construction and widening along Weddington Road at I-485 (STIP Project No. R-0211EC). The R-0211EC project is being completed as part of the I-485 Express Lanes project and is expected to be completed sometime this year.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

The proposed improvements include:

  • Additional thru-lanes and turn lanes on Weddington Road
  • Additional turn lanes on eastbound McKee Road
  • Creation of longer turn lanes to hold more vehicles
  • Build medians on all roads leading to the intersection

Proposed pedestrian improvements include:

  • Replace current sidewalks with 10-foot-wide paths for walking and biking
  • Add new sidewalks where needed
  • Extend Weddington Road multi-use paths south to Fincher Meadows Lane/Fieldstone Manor Drive
  • Extend McKee Road multi-use paths from McKee Farm Lane to Savannah Hills Drive

Marked crosswalks include:

  • Signalized crossings for all directions at McKee Road and Weddington Road intersection
  • Unsignalized crossings for all directions at McKee Road and Darlington Road intersection

PROJECT HISTORY

NCDOT STIP Project No. I-5507 (I-485 Express Lanes) is currently under construction and as part of that project, a new interchange is being constructed (STIP No. R-0211EC) at Weddington Road and I-485. As a part of the I-5507/R-0211EC projects, Weddington Road will be extended south from the new ramps tying into the proposed improvements included with HL-0024.

Traffic from the new Weddington Road interchange, along with existing traffic, will make congestion worse at the McKee Road and Weddington Road intersection. The HL-0024 project was started through coordination between the Town of Matthews, City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization to find faster funding options and fix the current and future traffic problems.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
