Why Plan?

This planning study, called Murphy in Motion, will assess current places to walk and bike and identify a future walking and biking vision. A bicycle and pedestrian plan like Murphy in Motion will help the town identify strategies to create more places for people to walk, bike, and access transit. This plan will also help Murphy identify what facilities to build first and what programs might enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity for people who walk and bike.

Existing Sidewalks & Greenways

Murphy has a good network of sidewalks, especially in the downtown area, with a useful bus route along the central "spine" of the town's roadway system. The Murphy River Walk is a beloved transportation and recreation amenity, with 4 miles of trails along the confluence of the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers. There are other existing paths and trails in parks, including Konehete Veteran's Park and Piney Knob.

How Did We Get Here?

Murphy in Motion is guided by a Steering Committee of residents, volunteers, business owners, and local government staff who provide their expertise to the project. We are also gathering input from this survey and in-person events. Through these activities, we hope to gain insight about peoples' perspectives on transportation and mobility in Murphy and identify ways to make the community better for people walking and bicycling.
