Why Plan?

This planning study, called Murphy in Motion, will assess current places to walk and bike and identify a future walking and biking vision. A bicycle and pedestrian plan like Murphy in Motion will help the town identify strategies to create more places for people to walk, bike, and access transit. This plan will also help Murphy identify what facilities to build first and what programs might enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity for people who walk and bike.

Existing Sidewalks & Greenways

Murphy has a good network of sidewalks, especially in the downtown area, with a useful bus route along the central "spine" of the town's roadway system. The Murphy Riverwalk is a beloved transportation and recreation amenity, with 4 miles of trails along the confluence of the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers. There are other existing paths and trails in parks, including Konehete Veteran's Park and Piney Knob.

How Did We Get Here?

Murphy in Motion is guided by a Steering Committee of residents, volunteers, business owners, and local government staff who provide their expertise to the project. We are also gathering input from this survey and in-person events. Through these activities, we hope to gain insight about peoples' perspectives on transportation and mobility in Murphy and identify ways to make the community better for people walking and bicycling.

Project Background

NCDOT has awarded a grant from the Planning Grant Initiative to the Town of Murphy to develop Murphy in Motion. The project is expected to be completed in early 2025 (timeline is subject to change based on final review process).

Survey Purpose

The purpose of this survey is to collect your thoughts about walking an bicycling (and riding the bus) in Murphy. Your input will help us prioritize a list of recommended sidewalk, greenway, and bike lane projects.

Who is it for?

This survey is for everyone who lives, works or visits Murphy.

How long will the survey be open?

We will be collecting responses to this survey through mid-July 2024.

What will we do with this information?

Your input will be used to create the Murphy in Motion Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan. Once the Plan is adopted, the Town and NCDOT can use it to direct how we build projects, make policy choices, build programs and events, and apply for new types of funding.
