nasty branch greenway

Happening Now

Design and permitting of the Nasty Branch Greenway is in progress. Once complete, the project will go out to bid for construction.

Next Milestone: Advertise and select a construction firm.

Background

The Nasty Branch Greenway is a planned ¾-mile-long greenway that starts at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center on Depot Street and Livingston Street and terminates at Phifer Street near the McDowell Street and Southside Avenue intersection. This greenway will travel on flat terrain along the banks of the creek called Nasty Branch and is an important east/west connection in Asheville’s larger greenway network. At both ends of the Nasty Branch Greenway, the Greenway Connectors project provides continuity for users to further destinations.

The Nasty Branch Greenway was previously called the “Town Branch” Greenway. In the Fall of 2020, the City of Asheville officially changed the name of this greenway to the Nasty Branch Greenway to honor the microlocal name the Southside neighborhood calls the creek.

Interpretive Signage Design

Interpretive signage will be incorporated along the Nasty Branch Greenway. The final design for the signage was created with input from longtime Southside residents and those who grew up in the Southside neighborhood. The signs share the rich history and cultural legacy of the Southside community and provide a narrative of the devastating impacts of urban renewal in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The signage also gives more detail to the significance of the name “Nasty Branch”.

The final designs are also on display at the Grant Center for the community to view during their normal operating hours.
