Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation, proposes roadway improvements on Newland Road (S.R. 1126) from A Canal Road (S.R. 1128) to Shore Drive (S.R. 1183) in Washington County, NC. The purpose of the project is to improve safety along Newland Road by widening the roadway to meet current NCDOT design standards and address structural pavement deficiencies.

Open House Public Meeting

An open house public meeting for this project will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Washington County Middle School (Gym), 37 E. Millpond Road, Roper, N.C. The meeting will be an informal, drop-in style meeting with project maps and project information on display for public viewing. N.C Department of Transportation representatives and consultant project team members will be available to answer questions and receive comments regarding the project. All comments received will be reviewed and discussed by the project team and taken into consideration as the project develops.

Project Highlights

To improve long-term stability and safety, there are two proposed options.

Option 1: Widen Along Existing Alignment:

  • Reconstruct and widen the existing roadway along Newland Road to provide 12-foot travel lanes and 4-foot shoulders (of which 2-feet are paved), while maintaining the current alignment
  • This option will minimize impacts to adjacent properties and natural resources, and to attempt to limit the proposed work to the existing roadway embankment.

The maintenance of traffic (MOT) scheme for Option 1 will close the existing roadway and detour traffic for the duration of the project. The shortest detour route is approximately 21 miles long.

Option 1: Cross Section

Option 2: Upgrade Roadway on New Alignment to the North

  • Upgrade and realign Newland Road to a new location north of the existing route to bypass the unstable roadway embankment.
  • This option will utilize 12-foot lanes, 4-foot shoulders (of which 2 feet are paved), and drainage ditches
  • The new SR 1126 alignment will tie into the existing roadway approximately 900 feet west of the Newland Road at the Shore Drive intersection and just east of the existing Newland Road at A Canal Road intersection.
  • The maintenance of traffic (MOT) scheme for Option 2 will be to maintain traffic on existing Newland Road for the duration of the project, utilizing lane closures as needed while the new roadway is constructed.

Option 2: Cross Section

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
