What is this project?
This project will explore the feasibility and implementation strategies for a new microtransit transportation service in Onslow County.
On-demand microtransit is an emerging service option for public transit agencies utilizing an on-demand transportation solution that is flexible and responsive to the real-time needs of transit riders.
Why microtransit?
Microtransit refers to a flexible, on-demand transportation service that typically uses smaller vehicles, such as shuttles or vans, to serve specific areas or communities. It operates in a similar way to ridesharing services (like Uber or Lyft) but can be operated by a public transit agency. Unlike traditional fixed-route buses (like Jacksonville Transit), microtransit services are more dynamic, with flexible routes and schedules that are responsive to the real-time needs of transit riders; in other words, the transit vehicle is requested by the rider in real time. Microtransit is often used to fill gaps in public transit networks, particularly in low-density areas or for last-mile connections to larger transit hubs. Riders located in a defined microtransit zone are typically picked up at their preferred origin and taken to their preferred destination (i.e., curb-to-curb service). The ability to use transit for spontaneous trips similar to driving is fundamental to providing equitable mobility.
Who is it for?
