Project Overview

Replace the bridge (No. 330289) on University Parkway (S.R. 4000) Over U.S. 52. The bridge was built in 1962.

The bridge is both Structurally Deficient and Functionally Obsolete.

Structurally Deficient does not mean that the bridge is unsafe.  A bridge is Structurally Deficient if it is in relatively poor condition, or has insufficient load-carrying capacity. The insufficient load capacity could be due to the original design or to deterioration.

Functionally Obsolete A bridge is considered Functionally Obsolete if it is narrow, has inadequate under-clearances, has insufficient load-carrying capacity, is poorly aligned with the roadway, and can no longer adequately service today's traffic.

Sidewalks will be added to the structure.

NCDOT has identified three areas in the project vicinity where water accumulates due to drainage issues.  NCDOT will be working to provide drainage improvements to these areas.

Traffic will be maintained during construction by using staged construction beginning on the west side.

Project Map

This map shows the location of the bridge to be replaced.  Additional repaving and restriping will be accomplished within the project area (between ramps) to match lanes on the bridge.

Clicking on the map will open it in a new window for viewing or downloading.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
