The Salem Parks and Recreation Commission approved the concept design for Curtis Park. The city will be applying for the PARC grant in July of 2024 for Construction funds to assist with the redevelopment of the park.

Crowley Cottrell has prepared three conceptual schemes for the redesign of Curtis Park based community input that has been provided over the past year. The three schemes will be presented at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on November 14, 2023, via Zoom at 6:30pm. The Parks and Recreation Commission will be asked to vote on their preferred plan. The plan chosen by the Parks and Recreation Commission will be used to apply for a PARC grant in the summer of 2024. If awarded the grant, construction will begin in 2025.
All community members and interested parties are invited to attend the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting to provide their comments on the proposed design plan.

On Monday, May 8, 2023, from 2:30 - 3:30 the City of Salem and its consultant, Crowley Cottrell, held a meeting for community input to discuss design options for Curtis Park renovations. This was the second of three Curtis Park redesign community engagement meetings.
UPDATE:
On December 1st, City staff and its consultant, Cottrell/Crowley got together with the Carlton Innovation School community and the Bridge Street Neck community for a successful engagement opportunity to share ideas for improvements at Curtis Park.
Participants were able to discuss the current conditions and ways the to improve the park. Several large posters with examples of different play structures and park designs for child development were on display for participants to choose their preferences for the redesign of the park. It was a great success!
Cottrell/ Crowley Staff are reviewing the survey results and feedback from the community meeting. Please check back for updates on the redesign at Curtis Memorial Park.
Charles R. Curtis Memorial Park Redesign
In 2020, the City of Salem Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, along with the Carlton Innovation School, Carlton School PTO and the Bridge Street Neck Neighborhood Association partnered together to submit a Community Preservation Act (CPA) funding application to the City Council to facilitate improvements needed to make Curtis Park a safe place to learn and grow physically, socially and emotionally. The City Council awarded $20,000 in CPA funds towards the redesign of the park and the City has allocated Community Development Block Grant funding towards the project.
The City of Salem has hired local landscape Architect Cottrell/Crowley, to develop a redesign plan for the park.

Community members are encouraged to attend to share how the space is currently used, what the preferences are for playground equipment and community amenities and how the funds should be used.
