Dalton Highway Bridges Planning Bundle (Grant Overview)
Dalton Highway Bridges Planning Bundle (Grant Overview)
Appliction for the Bridge Investment Program (BIP) Planning Grant:
Total Project: $2,429,022
State Match: $493,804
Federal Request $1,975,218
This planning project will fund PEL studies for four bridges along the Dalton Highway/Koyukuk River Drainage:
- Bridge No. 1547 Wiseman Creek Bridge is a nonredundant steel tension member (NSTM) truss. It is scour-critical and has an overall fair condition rating.
- Bridge No. 1261 Middle Fork Koyukuk River No.1 is in fair condition and features a recently completed emergency pier repair.
- Bridge No. 1282 Middle Fork Koyukuk River 2 Bridge is scour critical, in fair condition, and in close proximity to the Hammond River Bridge. Concurrent replacement with Bridge No. 1336 is advisable to preserve a favorable roadway profile and site distance condition for safety.
- Bridge No. 1336 Hammond River is in poor condition and is high on DOT&PF’s structurally deficient bridge priority list.
This planning project will lead to the potential for these Bridge Projects to move toward replacement, which will contribute to the functioning and growth of the economy that is dependent on them for freight connectivity and the movement of travelers and residents in communities along the Dalton Highway. The deterioration of the bridges and related transportation assets threatens to result in bridge service gaps, which replacement would overcome.
Bridge Investment Program (BIP) Grant
The Bridge Investment Program is a competitive, discretionary program that focuses on existing bridges to reduce the overall number of bridges in poor condition, or in fair condition at risk of falling into poor condition. It also expands applicant eligibilities to create opportunity for all levels of government to be direct recipients of program funds.
The BIP is broken down into three funding categories:
1. Large Bridge Projects: Bridge projects where total eligible costs are over $100 million
2. Bridge Projects: Bridge projects where total eligible costs are under $100 million
3. Planning Projects: Projects that will prepare bridges to be eligible applicants to one of the other BIP grant programs
