NCDOT is proposing to improve about 7 miles of Ramsey Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway to Bethune Drive on the east side of Fayetteville.
Project Overview
NCDOT seeks to improve about 7 miles of Ramsey Street from the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway to north of Bethune Drive on the east side of Fayetteville. The project's goal is to ease congestion, plan for future growth in traffic volumes and improve safety and bicycle and pedestrian access along this heavily traveled corridor.
The department is evaluating widening Ramsey Street to six lanes along the corridor and including bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. NCDOT is also evaluating improvements at these two major Ramsey Street interchanges: at I‐295 and at the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway.

Project Study Area and Sections
Project History
The project was initially driven by congestion concerns. In 2000, NCDOT completed a Feasibility Study validating the congestion concerns and recommending widening the corridor. The current corridor between Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway and Country Club Drive currently has three southbound lanes, two northbound lanes and an open‐center turn lane. Further north, Ramsey Street has a raised median with two travel lanes in each direction.
