Project Highlights
The proposed improvements include roundabouts at the intersections of West Main Street and Elm Street and Elm Street and North Bridge Street along with improving bicycle and pedestrian accommodations in Surry and Yadkin Counties. The project also includes rehabilitating the Bridge on West Main Street going over the Yadkin River.
The purpose of this project is to provide safe passage for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists along the corridor. The length of the project is approximately 0.35 miles.
Alternatives
Alternative 1:
- A roundabout will be constructed at the West Main Street / Elm Street intersection that is shifted to the west of the West Main Street centerline.
- River Road will be relocated to tie into the roundabout.
- A roundabout will be constructed at the Elm Street / North Bridge Street intersection.
- The West Main Street / Elm Street intersection will operate better as it creates a shift in the alignment which will serve to slow the traffic down and create a safer intersection.
- The shifted location of the roundabout at the intersection of West Main Street / Elm Street will simplify construction and allow most of the roundabout to be constructed under traffic with only short-term closures or detours.
- The shifted alignment of West Main Street allows more room to properly tie Cherry Street in and provides more sight distance. While neither alternative provides an ideal location for the intersection of West Main Street and Cherry Street, the design team believes Alternate 1/1A provides a safer option.
- River Road will function in its current location, but the design team believes relocating River Road to tie into the roundabout (Alternative 1/2) to be a safer and more efficient option.
Alternative 1A:
- A roundabout will be constructed at the West Main Street / Elm Street intersection that is shifted to the west of the West Main Street centerline.
- The River Road / West Main Street intersection will remain in its current location.
- A roundabout will be constructed at the Elm Street / North Bridge Street intersection.

Alternative 2:
- A roundabout will be constructed at the West Main Street / Elm Street intersection centered on the West Main Street centerline.
- River Road will be relocated to tie into the roundabout.
- A roundabout will be constructed at the Elm Street / North Bridge Street intersection.
- With the roundabout located centered in line with the bridge, it is very unlikely the roundabout can be constructed without closing the road for an extended period. As the local citizens are aware, this route is the primary detour for I-77 in the event of an emergency.
- The location of the roundabout at West Main Street / Elm Street centered on the West Main Street centerline creates a steeper grade entering the roundabout from Elm Street and will impact the rideability and the operation of the roundabout.
- The location of the roundabout at West Main Street / Elm Street centered on the West Main Street centerline will make the pedestrian movement from the south side of Elm Street to the east side of West Main Street and Cherry Street difficult to construct and maintain.
- River Road will function in its existing location, but the design team believes relocating River Road to tie into the roundabout (Alternative 1/2) to be a safer and more efficient option.
Alternative 2A:
- A roundabout will be constructed at the West Main Street / Elm Street intersection centered on the West Main Street centerline.
- The River Road / West Main Street intersection will remain in its current location.
- A roundabout will be constructed at the Elm Street / North Bridge Street intersection.

Roundabouts
The N.C. Department of Transportation builds roundabouts to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical of traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals. A driver generally enters the roundabout more quickly than if waiting at a traffic signal. In addition, the modern roundabout is much smaller than older traffic circles and requires vehicles to travel at lower speeds (15-20 mph), making them safer than traffic circles. Additionally, the slower speeds make it easier for a driver to find a gap of traffic inside the roundabout before safely entering it.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
