STARS Route 259 Study
STARS Route 259 Study
The Route 259 (Mayland Road) STARS study is a collaborative effort between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Rockingham County, and the Town of Broadway to evaluate transportation needs and develop recommendations for a 4-mile section of Route 259. The study location begins at the intersection of Route 259 and Broadway Avenue in the Town of Broadway and ends at the intersection of Route 259 and Route 11 in Rockingham County. The primary objective of this STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study is to identify crash hotspots and recommend targeted improvements to address observed safety issues. Recommendations to enhance mobility for all roadway users will also be considered.
Please complete this brief survey to inform the study team of how you use Route 259 and whether you have any concerns or suggestions for the corridor based on how it operates today.
For additional background, Route 259 is a two-lane roadway classified as a minor arterial with an Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) of 8,800 as of 2022 and a posted speed limit of 55 mph. Apart from connecting the Towns of Broadway and Timberville to I-81, the study corridor also connects Route 48, also known as Corridor H of the Appalachian Development Highway System, to I-81 southbound. By providing an alternative route for Route 48 users to reach I-81 southbound, the corridor attracts a high percentage of trucks.
The study will evaluate existing and future transportation conditions along the study corridor. VDOT is serving as the project manager for the study with ATCS as a consulting partner for developing the study, supporting analysis, and improvement concepts. Final study recommendations will be considered by the county and town for advancement through state transportation funding programs
