STARS Route 50 - Winchester / Frederick County Alternatives
This STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study assesses potential safety and operational improvements for US Route 50 (Northwestern Turnpike/Amherst Street) between the VDOT Area Headquarters in Frederick County and the intersection of Keating Drive in the City of Winchester. This survey is being used to gather the public’s input on the alternatives under consideration to improve identified issues by the study team and from the previous survey. The first round of public involvement for this project was held in May 2023. In general, most respondents traveled through the corridor in a personal vehicle on a daily basis. Respondents prioritized a need for reducing traffic congestion and improving corridor/intersection safety as their most important considerations for this study. While multimodal improvements were considered a lesser priority for respondents, a lack of necessary crosswalks and sidewalks within the corridor was noted.
