Background

The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the Route 419 (Electric Road) corridor in Roanoke County between Starkey Road and Springwood Park Drive. This study is focusing on improving roadway and pedestrian safety, capacity preservation (to keep traffic flowing smoothly), multimodal accessibility/connectivity (bicyclist, pedestrian, and transit), and transportation demand management (TDM) needs. The project recommendations that come from this study may be developed into funding applications for VDOT's SMART SCALE program and other transportation funding programs.

This Phase 2 survey is intended to obtain public input on the alternatives under consideration to address the issues that were identified by the study team and prioritize improvements to seek funding.

Innovative Intersections

Innovative intersection designs including Restricted Crossing U-turns (RCUTs) and Thru-cuts are recommended at intersections along Route 419 within the study area.

Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) Intersection

What is an RCUT? Click here to learn more.

  • Intersection design where all side street movements begin with a right turn
  • Side street left-turn and through vehicles turn right and make a U-turn at a downstream median opening to complete the desired movement

Thru-cut Intersection

What is a Thru-cut? Click here to learn more.

  • Intersection design where side street through movements are prohibited
  • Side street motorists turn left or right and make another turn at an existing opening to cross the major street
